Mexico: Glossing over the cracks

President Enrique Peña Nieto presented the last of his annual state of the nation reports, known as the ‘Informe’, on 3 September. Possibly the most difficult section of the report covered an account of the government’s security strategy over its six-year term in office. The president managed to acknowledge, or came close to acknowledging, that this was one of his major failures; but at the same time he claimed a series of successes in related areas. The result was somewhat confusing – creating difficult ground for his successor, President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to build the foundations of a new approach.
