LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 26 September 2018

In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s future deputy finance minister, Gerardo Esquivel, has said that considering the current political and economic climate Mexico should perhaps rethink its focus on the US and look more towards its southern neighbours and Spain. Speaking at the first ‘Future in Spanish’ forum in Mexico, co-organised by Vocero, a Spanish media group. and El Universal, a leading Mexican daily, Esquivel said that Mexico should maintain its commercial ties with the US while looking to expand its relationship with other countries. He also highlighted the economic potential of the Spanish language and noted that closer integration between Spanish-speaking countries could benefit the cultural industry. Esquivel will assume his new role after President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador takes office on 1 December.
