China weighs up its debt-saddled sibling

There is little doubt that Venezuela’s ‘big sister’ – as President Nicolás Maduro dubbed the Chinese government ahead of his latest trip to Beijing – is wrestling with whether to throw good money after bad in Caracas, or whether it’s time to show some tough love with its junior dependent. Aside from the sizeable financial cost (US$63bn and counting), there is also a political question weighing for Beijing, in terms of its growing foreign policy role in the global arena.
