In brief: Brazil

Norwegian metal company Norsk Hydro has announced the temporary suspension of all of its operations in Alunorte, the world’s biggest alumina refinery located in the Brazilian state of Pará, and in the nearby bauxite mine, Paragominas. Following an environmental dispute with Brazilian regulators over the alleged leakage of toxic waste into local water reserves earlier this year, Alunorte has been prevented from using a new waste deposit area, and the alumina plant has been running at 50% capacity since March. Norsk Hydro took the decision to suspend Alunorte’s operations as its current waste deposit area is reaching full capacity. “This will impact jobs, communities, suppliers and customers,” Norsk Hydro executive vice president for Bauxite & Alumina, John Thuestad, said in an official statement on the company’s website, adding that Norsk Hydro is working with Brazilian authorities to try to resume operations.
