* Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra has signed a decree formally calling for a national referendum to be held on 9 December on the four political and judicial reforms proposed by his government and recently approved by the national congress. The four reforms are aimed at radically overhauling the national judiciary and congress in a bid to address the current crisis stemming from the various corruption and influence trafficking allegations affecting the two institutions. But while President Vizcarra thanked congress for agreeing to submit the reforms (which require constitutional changes) to a referendum to expedite their implementation, he criticised the changes introduced by legislators to the proposal to re-establish a national senate and called on the population to vote against this specific reform in the referendum but in favour of the other three.
