In brief: Paraguay

* Paraguay’s national statistics directorate (DGEEC) has released the latest instalment of its national household economic survey, which found that the national unemployment rate stood at 5.9% in the second quarter of the year, 1.4 percentage points lower than the 7.3% unemployment rate registered in the comparable period of 2017. A DGEEC press release noted that this is the first time that the agency has measured the number of unemployed across the country rather than only in the country’s main urban areas following the adoption of new methodology. According to the DGEEC, the new methodology should make the measuring of unemployment more accurate and provide a better tool for the evaluation of public policies. The DGEEC press release points out that the latest unemployment rate figure means that 3.28m people are presently out of a job in the country.
