In brief: Colombia

* Colombia’s national federation of coffee growers (FNC) was one of the associations from more than 30 countries that signed a letter directed at the world’s principal wholesale coffee buyers (including companies such as Starbucks and Nestlé), warning them of the urgency of finding a solution to the current coffee price crisis. Groups of coffee growers from Latin America, Asia, and Africa have come together to highlight the negative impact that the steady drop in the price of coffee is having on small producers across the world. The price of coffee has dropped to US$0.94 per pound this year, according to the FNC. Colombia’s coffee growers have already called upon the industry to have a more sustainable economic relationship with them, with FNC general manager Roberto Vélez Vallejo suggesting that the country should focus on the production of speciality coffees.
