In brief: Chile/Paraguay

*  Director of Chile’s official trade promotion agency (ProChile) in Paraguay, Carlos Brunel Vergara, has said that Chile’s bilateral trade with Paraguay has increased by 15% so far this year compared to 2017. Speaking at a business forum in Asunción, Paraguay, Brunel said that the bilateral trade between the two countries increased from US$1.1bn in 2016 to US$1.3bn in 2017 but that preliminary trade figures from ProChile show that this figure will be surpassed this year. Brunel went on to say that Pacific Alliance member Chile considers Southern Common Market (Mercosur) member Paraguay to be a strategic trade partner and that “Chile is working to develop closer trade and productive ties with Paraguay…the objective is for Chilean firms to export to third markets in alliance with Paraguayan firms, taking advantage of the free trade agreements that they have with other markets”.
