Brazil: The challenge of the ‘fake news’ phenomenon

Brazil’s security forces were deployed on the weekend of 7 October, the date of the first round of the country’s presidential election, to guarantee a smooth and democratic electoral process. A total of 280,000 officials, including the armed forces, civil, federal, and military police were coordinated from the dedicated Centro Integrado de Comando e Controle das Eleições (CICCE) to assure the safety of citizens as they turned out to vote. In parallel, the federal police (PF) were specifically on duty to prevent and investigate electoral crimes such as the falsification of voting documents and illegal campaigning. A new crime that they have had to contend with this year is the deliberate creation and spreading of misinformation, or ‘fake news’.
