In brief: Colombia

* The Colombian government led by President Iván Duque has announced a new strategy aimed at strengthening higher education. Known as ‘Generación E’, the initiative seeks to provide access to higher education for young people in an economically vulnerable position and aims to benefit 330,000 people over a four-year period. The initiative has three specific components aimed at providing better equality: increased provision of free education in public higher education institutions; recognition for the best students from poorer backgrounds; and strengthening the country’s 61 public higher education institutions. The announcement follows the decision on 11 October by the national union of higher education students (UNEES), which groups 32 public universities, to call an indefinite strike in response to a lack of budget.
