In brief: Paraguay

* Paraguay’s public works & communications minister, Arnoldo Wiens, has announced that the government will be taking “legal and financial measures” against Portuguese construction firm Mota Engil over its decision to abandon the works linked to the Metrobús bus rapid transit (BRT) project that is being developed in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción. The Metrobús project is one of the largest public transport projects in Paraguay and has been in the pipeline since 2012, but the works have been beset by problems including rising costs and construction delays. Wiens’ announcement came after the local press reported that all work on the project contracted to Mota Engil had been suspended over complaints by the firm over a lack of funding for the works. However, Wiens has insisted that the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez has met all its contractual obligations to Mota Engil since assuming office in August and that the suspension of work is unjustified. Wiens said that consequently he would be meeting with his peer at the finance ministry and the attorney general to analyse what “drastic measures” to take against Mota Engil.
