LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 23 October 2018

In brief: Brazil

* The Brazilian renewable energy subsidiary of Italian-owned Enel Group, Enel Green Power Brasil (EGPB), has begun the construction of a new solar power plant in São Gonçalo de Gurguéia, in Brazil’s north-eastern state of Piauí. The São Gonçalo plant, currently the biggest photovoltaic solar plant under construction in South America, will have a generating capacity of 475 megawatts (MW). Grupo Enel will reportedly invest R$1.4bn (around US$390m) in the construction of the solar plant, which is due to be completed by 2020. Once operational, the plant will be able to generate more than 1,200 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year and avoid over 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. “São Gonçalvo is going to contribute to the diversification and resilience of the country’s energy matrix, reinforcing a virtual economic cycle through the long-term supply of renewable energy”, said Anotonio Cammisecra, head of Enel Green Power, the group’s global renewable energy business.
