In brief: Chile

* Chile’s senate has approved plans to update and expand the country’s existing free trade agreement (FTA) with China. The approval of the protocol was hailed by Chile’s foreign minister, Roberto Ampuero, who said that the updating of Chile’s FTA with China would be “good news for the country”. Ampuero noted that under the proposed plans 97.3% of Chilean exports would be able to enter China tariff free. Pointing out that China is currently Chile’s main trading partner (with bilateral trade reaching US$34.59bn last year), Ampuero added: “The relation with China is key. It not only is a huge market, but it is also a key player in the Asia Pacific region, a nerve centre for trade”. The approved plans for updating the FTA include the introduction of two new chapters to the existing agreement, on electronic trade and on trade and the environment.
