In brief: Peru

* The president of Peru’s national tourism chamber (Canatur), Carlos Canales, has said that the construction of a second runaway at the ‘Jorge Chávez’ International Airport in Lima will bring new airlines and hotel chains to Peru. Construction of the new runway is set to begin in the first quarter of 2019 and the project is expected to be completed within two years. According to Canales, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Volaris, and Swiss Air are among the airlines that have expressed an interest in investing and expanding operations in Peru following the completion of the new runway. Canales added that re-introducing direct flights from Europe with airlines such as Alitalia and Lufthansa could also encourage increased tourism from the continent. Canales noted that Canatur will also partner with Peru’s official tourism promotion agency (PromPerú) to encourage more tourism from Europe and Asia once the new runaway is completed. Regarding investment from hotel chains, Canatur’s president revealed that Accor and Hilton have already demonstrated interest in building new hotels in the area surrounding the airport.
