LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 31 October 2018

In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released the latest figures on unemployment, which show that the unemployment rate for July to September has decreased compared to the previous quarter, from 12.4% to 11.9%. In absolute numbers, unemployment has decreased by 3.7% with a total of 12.5m unemployed in the third quarter of 2018, down from 13m in April-June. Underutilisation (unemployment and underemployment) has also decreased slightly. The IBGE notes that this decrease in unemployment is in part due to an increase in the number of self-employed workers and of people working in the informal economy.
