In brief: Chile

* Chile’s anti-trust court (TDLC) has approved with some conditions the joint business agreements (JBAs) between Latam Airlines Group, American Airlines, and International Airlines Group (IAG, the holding company of British Airways and Iberia). The JBAs, which have been under analysis for nearly three years, will allow the airlines to coordinate schedules and prices for flights. In a statement, Latam Airlines said that it is still examining the implications of the conditions imposed by the TDLC (which include maintaining the current capacity of flights on the direct Santiago-Miami and Santiago-Madrid routes), but that the decision is, “in principle”, an important precedent for aviation in Chile. The chief executive of Latam Airlines, Enrique Cueto, said that “this is an opportunity to ensure growth for the industry, increase passenger traffic and bring Chile closer to the world as well as promote tourism, business travel and the economy through aviation”. Latam Airlines’ JBAs have already been approved by the relevant regulatory bodies in Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay.
