* The Costa Rican government has announced the indefinite suspension of the 'El Diquís' hydroelectric megaproject, which is located in Buenos Aires canton, Puntarenas province, after seven years of delays and paralysis. The decision regarding the 650MW megaproject, one of the biggest in Central America, which was expected to be ready by 2024, was announced by Irene Cañas the executive president of the Costa Rican electricity institute (ICE), the government-run electricity and telecommunications services provider, as part of a series of adjustments aimed at improving the ICE’s finances. The Diquís project had faced problems and delays since the beginning, particularly due to the opposition from local indigenous communities due to the feared environmental impacts of the project. Cañas also announced the suspension of a consultation process involving these local communities which had been underway.
