In brief: Mexico

*Mexico's President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that he has successfully negotiated an agreement with 16 contractors over the cancellation of the Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de México (NAIM) international airport project. After a two-hour meeting, López Obrador said that the group had agreed to support the future government in the alternative airport project at Santa Lucía. The 16 contractors present hold 92% of the existing contracts, which will be severed without any fines or penalties. After the controversial decision to cancel the NAIM, López Obrador had been keen to end discussions of the issue and move on with the plan to repurpose the military airport at Santa Lucía to handle commercial flights. The existing Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez will also be renovated, and more planes will be routed to Toluca airport, some 60km west of Mexico City by road. López Obrador hailed the new agreement and said that further discussions will be held with other contractors in order to sever the contracts and open the door to new tenders for the Santa Lucía project.
