Development: On 13 November the defence lawyer for Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera alleged that his client is a “scapegoat” and that the “real leader” of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) is Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, who had preserved his freedom by bribing top Mexican government officials, including President Enrique Peña Nieto and his predecessor Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
