* Mexico’s agriculture ministry (Sagarpa) has announced that the country’s food production totalled 286m tonnes in 2017, a 12% increase compared with 2012. Agricultural production increased by 12.1%, livestock production by 10.7%, and fishing and aquaculture by 22.7%. The latter reached historic volumes, with fishing and aquaculture production totalling 2.1m tonnes in 2017. Sagarpa notes that food production has increased at twice the rate of population growth in Mexico, and that these results are in line with the country’s 2013-2018 national development plan, which aims to guarantee both the Mexican population’s social rights and food security.
