* Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has signed three new bilateral cooperation agreements with his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern. According to a Chilean government press release the new agreements include a bilateral strategic agricultural agreement, and a separate agreement on removing non-tariff barriers to bilateral trade. President Piñera, who is currently in New Zealand on an official visit, said that the new agricultural cooperation agreement should modernise the sector in Chile and turn the country into “an agri-food powerhouse”. Piñera also said that he hoped that the new bilateral agreement on non-tariff barriers could lead to New Zealand joining the Pacific Alliance regional trade bloc, of which Chile is a member. Chile and New Zealand signed a free trade agreement (FTA) in 2005 and the main prerequisite for countries to join the Pacific Alliance is to have FTAs in place with all its members.
