Region: Democracy eroded?

Voters in Mexico and Brazil, the two largest countries in Latin America, have chosen populist outsiders (of the Left and of the Right, respectively) to be their new presidents. Is this part of a healthy shake-up of the status quo or a sign that democracy is being eroded? The publication of Latinobarómetro’s annual public opinion survey covering perceptions of democracy may offer some clues.
