Latin American Regional Report: Andean Group we begin by looking at
Peru where tourism is a major industry, and great success story: recent years have seen an annual increase in both numbers of tourists visiting the country and the amount they spend. Yet 2018 has been something of a complicated year, with political upheaval in the early part of it meaning that, despite forecasts of a 7%-8% increase in visitor numbers from 2017, the sector experienced something of a wobble. While many are confident that the sector is sure to recover lost ground, we look more closely concerns which have emerged on two fronts: firstly, that if Peru does garner a reputation for political instability, it risks scaring away potential visitors; and secondly, that many of the big draws – chief among them the Incan archaeological site of Machu Picchu – are already operating at more than capacity.
