Chile’s army embroiled in fresh scandal

Development: On 22 November a Chilean media outlet published a leaked audio recording during which the commander-in-chief of the army, Ricardo Martínez, reveals that officials within the institution have been selling weapons to drug trafficking organisations and other criminal groups.

Significance: The incendiary revelations further harm the reputation of the army, which is already caught up in a corruption scandal. They also coincide with serious damage to the credibility of Chile’s militarised police, the Carabineros, after a Mapuche youth, Camilo Catrillanca, was shot dead last week in the conflict-torn southern region of La Araucanía.
