* France’s President Emmanuel Macron has warned that the ambivalent position of Brazil’s President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on combating climate change could prejudice the trade deal currently under negotiation between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). Speaking at the opening of the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Macron said he supports an EU-Mercosur agreement (which could be in the offing after years of discussion) but that Mercosur will have to consider the impact of the recent political shift in Brazil, and that he will not sign trade deals with countries that do not support the Paris climate agreement. This week, Brazil reneged on its commitment to host the 25
th Conference of the Parties (COP25) international climate talks next year. Bolsonaro said this decision came at his request as the COP25 threatens Brazil’s national sovereignty, particularly over the Amazon forest, and is therefore of no interest to the country.
