* China’s President Xi Jinping has paid his first ever visit to Panama since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in June 2017, following Panama’s decision to break diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Xi’s visit follows that by Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela to China from 5-9 November where he attended the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, having previously travelled to China in November 2017 for the first ever meeting between the two heads of state. According to a joint statement following Xi’s visit, which took place 2-3 December, the two presidents signed 19 agreements in “the fields of electronic commerce, trade in services, trade maritime, finance, agriculture, justice, culture, education, science and technology, among others”.
