LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 5 December 2018

In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national industry confederation (CNI), a private sector lobby, has found that the US is the country with which Brazilian exporters most want a trade deal, followed by Mexico, China, and Colombia. Exporters also cite a trade deal with the European Union (EU) as a priority. When asked with which countries they would like to have closer ties, Brazilian exporters overwhelmingly replied the US, as well as Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. The CNI sees the new government led by President-elect Jair Bolsonaro as an opportunity for Brazil to deepen its economic and commercial ties with the US. CNI’s industrial development director, Carlos Eduardo Abijaodi, said that this can happen in the short term by signing off on pending agreements in areas such as defence and intellectual property, and in the longer term by engaging in negotiations to eventually reach a free trade agreement.
