* Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela and Public Works Minister Ramón Arosemena have formally issued the order to proceed with the start of the US$1.5bn project to design and construct a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal. The project is due to be carried out by China’s Consortium Panamá Cuarto Puente which comprises China Communications Construction Company LTD and China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. The work is due to last 54 months and is part of President Varela’s urban mobility plan in which US$6.5bn has been invested. According to a presidential press release, the fourth bridge will join the two ends of the Interoceanic Canal and is expected to benefit over 2m people. The announcement comes after China’s President Xi Jinping paid a visit to Panama on 2-3 December and signed 19 agreements with President Varela, spanning electronic commerce, trade in services, maritime trade, finance, agriculture, justice, culture, education, and science and technology, among other areas.
