* Paraguay’s national chamber of deputies has given final approval to the 2019 draft state budget after the congressional budget committee incorporated modifications introduced by the senate. The approved budget is for G$80.07trn (US$13.48bn), less than the G$80.20trn proposed by the executive led by President Mario Abdo Benítez (which was based on GDP growth forecasts of 4.7% in 2018 and 4% in 2019). A press release by the lower chamber highlights as notable aspects of the budget a 16% pay increase for teachers to begin as of April 2019 and the transfer of some G$10bn from the public works & communications ministry (MOPC) to the health ministry for the construction of a hospital in Caaguazú department.
