LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 07 December 2018

In brief: Mexico

* The latest economic figures released by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) show that domestic household consumption increased by 0.5% month-on-month in September. The results means that household consumption, one of the main drivers of Mexico’s national economy, has increased for five consecutive months. In annual terms, household consumption increased by 2.8% in September compared to September 2017. The increase in household consumption comes despite the recent depreciation of the Mexican peso against the US dollar (the Inegi data shows that consumption of imported goods increased by a marginal 0.1% month-on-month and by 4% year-on-year); and despite the fact that Inegi’s consumer confidence indicator shows that this fell to 41.2 points in November, 0.6 points lower than in the previous month and the lowest level since June.
