LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 10 December 2018

In brief: Uruguay

* Uruguay’s union of petrol fuel sellers (Unvenu) has reported that there are no petrol stations with petrol fuel supplies in the Montevideo metropolitan area as result of the indefinite strike called by the fuel transport sector workers’ union (UTC) on 6 December. The UTC called the strike in demand of improved working conditions after one driver was injured while filling up his tanker at the La Tablada fuel distribution plant owned by the state-run oil firm Ancap. Unvenu general manager, Federico de Castro, has confirmed that there have been no deliveries of fuel reported in the Montevideo metropolitan area since 7 December and that the situation of service stations in the area is “very serious” as none of them had any petrol fuels left. UTC has said that it is currently in talks with the government to try to resolve the conflict and that it will hold a general assembly today (10 December) to discuss whether to lift the strike or not.
