In brief: Brazil

* The authorities of the Brazilian port of Itaqui and the administration of the Panama Canal have signed an agreement with the aim of boosting the use of the canal by ships destined to or coming from Itaqui, as well as developing partnerships in technical areas. The port of Itaqui, located in the north-eastern state of Maranhão and part of the so-called ‘Northern Arc’ of Brazilian ports, is the first Brazilian port of entry or the last port of departure for the Asian markets. According to Ted Lago, president of Maranhão’s ports administration agency (Emap), this agreement will facilitate the movement of grain exports to Asia through the canal, as well as develop access to new markets on the western coast of the Americas and in the Pacific. The Northern Arc is responsible for 21% of Brazil’s soya and maize exports, and 80% of the soya exports that pass through Itaqui are destined to Asian markets.
