The Partido Nacional (PN) government led by President Juan Orlando Hernández boasted last week that it had sent to the legislature 169 areas of “consensus” reached in the political dialogue brokered by the United Nations (UN). The dialogue was aimed at addressing the post-electoral crisis stemming from claims by the November 2017 presidential opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla that widespread fraud had taken place in the vote which produced Hernández’s re-election victory. The UN representative in Honduras, Igor Garafulic, however, cast doubt on these claims of progress, telling reporters on 11 December – the date that the dialogue ended – that the 169 areas of “consensus” had failed to translate into formal political agreements. With Nasralla and his supporters continuing to call for Hernández’s departure, prospects for reconciliation remain dim.End of preview - This article contains approximately 808 words.
