Pompeo visits Brazil and Colombia

Brazil: On 2 January, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo held meetings in Brasília with Brazil’s newly inaugurated President Jair Bolsonaro, and with his foreign minister, Ernesto Araújo, both avowed admirers of US President Donald Trump. Pompeo reportedly discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation on trade, education, security, and defence with Bolsonaro, with a particular focus on the reinforcement of human rights and democratic governance in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. According to the Planalto presidential palace, Bolsonaro assured Pompeo of his commitment to guaranteeing stability in the region. With Araújo, Pompeo also discussed deepening economic ties and the joint fight against transnational crime. In a press conference after their meeting, Araújo spoke of a new era in US-Brazilian relations, while Pompeo described the “transformative opportunity for [their] two nations”, which “will have the opportunity to work alongside each other against authoritarian regimes around the world”. Bolsonaro and Trump had exchanged messages on Twitter the previous day, with Bolsonaro responding to Trump’s congratulations by saying “Together, under God’s protection, we shall bring prosperity and progress to our people!”
