PANAMA: Is Nito in pole position?

Panama’s general election, due on 5 May, is less than five months away. After primaries held last year, and the completion of various electoral alliances, there are now four presidential candidates in the running. The list will go up to seven with the addition of three independent, or non-party candidates. Although the race remains open, and there have been no recent opinion poll surveys, the available evidence points to Laurentino ‘Nito’ Cortizo of the opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) as the front runner. Here we look at the race as it begins to heat up.
