One of the world’s most disaster-prone areas, Central America and the Caribbean is highly exposed to a variety of natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides, and drought. As global warming increases, these hazards are likely to intensify, hitting the rural population especially hard. Thus, the isthmus faces the gargantuan challenge of developing a culture of disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction, in order to ensure the swift and timely evacuation of vulnerable populations, prevent the loss of life, and minimise the impact on livelihoods.
