REGION: Medical tourism continues to take off

As insurance premiums and medical costs in developed countries remain high, the falling cost and increasing ease of travel has seen greater numbers of people venture abroad for medical and cosmetic procedures. The Central American sub-region has been one of the world’s most proactive in picking up this slack. Organisations like Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer) admit that figures published on the medical tourism market are, for the most part, “highly speculative”. Yet most agree that medical tourism to Central America is on the rise, with the vast majority of patients coming from the US, Canada, or elsewhere in the region.
