GUYANA: Ethnic divisions harden ahead of crucial election

On 21 December, Guyana’s opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) brought a successful no-confidence motion in the government, by 33-32 votes in the 65-seat National Assembly and barring a successful legal challenge a general election must be held within 90 days of the vote. The stakes could hardly be higher.
