Mexico: Crackdown on the huachicoleros

In early January shortages of petrol began to emerge in a number of states, including Michoacán, Jalisco, Estado de México (Edomex), Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Tamaulipas. By the week starting Monday 7 January, the shortages had spread to Mexico City and there was some evidence of panic buying. The shortages are caused by a government crackdown on fuel theft, a major criminal activity that has grown in recent years.
