Guyana: Venezuela escalates its challenge to Guyana

The government of Guyana had a torrid Christmas. On 21 December it lost a no confidence vote in parliament, which means it must hold an election within 90 days (subject to legal challenge); on 22 December a Venezuelan naval vessel intercepted two vessels under contract to ExxonMobil that were preparing to conduct a seismic survey in the western portion of the Stabroek Block. The Venezuelans tried to land a helicopter on the deck of one of the ships, the Ramform Tethys, and both ships have now withdrawn.
