* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released the latest figures for unemployment, which show that the unemployment rate for October-December 2018 stood at 11.6%, a slight decrease on the previous quarter when unemployment reached 11.9%. The unemployment rate totalled 12.3% for the whole of 2018, down from 12.7% in 2017. The IBGE notes that the number of people employed in the formal sector has remained stable, whereas informal employment rose 3.8% in the final quarter of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017, and the number of workers who are self-employed grew by 2.8%.
