Faller visits El Salvador

Chile: On 24 January, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement which revealed that as US fruit distributor, Jac Vandenberg, is recalling 1,727 cartons of fresh peaches, 1,207 cartons of fresh nectarines, and 365 cartons of fresh plums all from Chile, “because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes” – an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. In a press conference, Chile’s agriculture minister, Antonio Walker, said: “When a positive analysis of a bacteria such as listeria is detected, the exporter has to alert the importer. In this case we had informed the FDA that we had had a positive listeria analysis in Chile…This speaks very well of an exporting country that has conquered 140 international markets, because Chile is a serious country and produces safe food. We have a history of over 50 years as an agri-food exporter, and when we encounter a problem, we inform the relevant authorities. This has been very well received by the US authorities.”
