* Gabriel Villaseñor, the president of Mexico’s association of producers and packagers of export avocados (Apeam), has announced that the Mexican state of Michoacán set a new record with the shipment of 121,000 tonnes (t) of avocados to the US for Super Bowl LIII – compared with the 100,000t recorded last year. Mexico is the world’s largest producer of avocados, with 1.9bn tons produced in 2017. In 2017, 985,653t of avocados were exported, a figure which amounts to US$2.34bn.
