Governor’s sudden death compounds main opposition party’s problems

Guillermo Pacheco Pulido of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) was elected on 21 January as the interim governor of Mexico’s Puebla state, following the sudden death on 24 December 2018 of the elected governor Martha Érika Alonso of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and her husband Rafael Moreno Valle – the leader of the PAN bench in the federal senate and her predecessor in Puebla (2011-2017) – in a helicopter crash. Pacheco was elected by an almost unanimous vote in the state congress, obtaining the support of all but one of the 41 Puebla legislators, including the PAN’s seven deputies. He will oversee the extraordinary gubernatorial election that will take place on 2 June, when voters will elect Alonso’s replacement.
