In brief: Mexico

*At a mining forum in Mexico, the country’s deputy mining minister, Francisco Quiroga, said that the country’s mining sector will “take off”. Quiroga stated that the goal is to achieve better practices – moving towards sustainable mining – and to incorporate local communities. He also announced that over 5,000 mining concessions are subject to review and could be cancelled if irregularities were detected: “We are reviewing them to make sure they were done correctly and that the rights of the involved parties are not affected”. Quiroga acknowledged that there are currently delays in the processing of mining concessions, some of which require urgent attention, adding that “any concession that is not reviewed is a failure of public policy”.
