In brief: Guatemala

* The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has announced its approval of a US$150m loan to Guatemala to implement a road improvement and rehabilitation programme connecting productive areas and departmental capitals to the main networks. According to an IDB press release, “this will allow a sustained transit of goods and people, which will substantially contribute to improving productivity by expanding the access to markets and social services in isolated communities characterised by high poverty rates”. The  press release notes that road transport is a crucial factor for productivity and trade in Guatemala, where 3.5m vehicles circulate each year, moving more than 24m tonnes (t) of goods. Despite this high traffic, the road density in Guatemala – the relationship between the length of the road network and the country’s land surface – is below average in the Latin American region (15.5k/100km2 vs 22 km/100km2); furthermore, the poor condition of roads increase operational costs and transit times. These data rank the country 18th out of 23 countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean Logistic Performance Index.
