In brief: Uruguay

* Uruguay’s livestock, agriculture & fishing ministry (MGAP) has announced that the country has resumed beef exports to Japan. A statement by MGAP head, Enzo Benech, explained that after years of intense diplomatic negotiations, at the end of last year the Japanese authorities finally agreed to allow the import of Uruguayan beef following its decision to suspend all imports following a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak registered in Uruguay in 2000. Thanks to this, Uruguayan meat packing firms have now sent a first beef export shipment of 4.7 tonnes to Japan. Benech celebrated the opening of a new market for Uruguayan beef, noting that Japan is one of the world’s main beef import markets and this provides a good opportunity for Uruguayan producers.
