In brief: Paraguay

* Paraguay’s heath minister, Julio Mazzoleni, has announced that the public health ministry will assign US$270m to buy medicines for the public health system this year, an increase of US$40m on 2018. Mazzoleni made his remarks after a meeting of the council of ministers in which the executive, led by President Mario Abdo Benítez, gave a “positive balance” of the first six months of his government, according to the government spokesperson Hugo Cáceres. The announcement regarding the increase in funds available for medicines comes as various unions have complained about the lack of medicines – a lack which Mazzoleni attributed to “maladjustments” in the internal system rather than lack of funds.
