Aurelio Hidalgo declared that in 2019 there will be greater emphasis on improving port infrastructure and modernising equipment, making 2019 the year of greatest progress and development with regard to the port sector. The MTOP highlighted the inauguration of the country’s first cruise terminal on 19 October 2018 in Manta, a port city on Ecuador's central coast, as the newest development in terms of Ecuador’s efforts to realise its tourism potential. Ecuador has four large maritime ports positioned on its coast: Puerto de Guayaquil which generated US$35.9m in public revenue in 2018; Puerto de Manta (US$4.6m); Puerto Bolívar (US$6.2m); and Estatal de Esmeraldas (US$10.8m).
