Brazil: At a 19 February news conference, Brazil’s presidential spokesman, General Otávio do Rêgo Barros, said that Brazil would follow the US’s lead in delivering humanitarian aid to Venezuela and that the US-Brazilian provision of aid would be coordinated. This is in response to the request by Venezuela’s self-declared interim president Juan Guaidó for the Brazilian government to provide aid. Do Rêgo Barros said that food and medicine would be transported in trucks by the Brazilian government starting on 23 February to Boa Vista and Pacaraima, both cities in Brazil’s Roraima state. These will then be picked up by Venezuelan volunteers organised by the Guaidó administration to be taken into Venezuelan territory where Venezuela’s political opposition hopes the military will disobey de facto president Nicolás Maduro’s order to block the entry of the aid. Brazil has created an inter-ministerial group with representatives from the presidential, defence, citizenship, and health ministries and the institutional security cabinet, among others to support and coordinate the operation.
